Introduction
The task set was design and produce a complete web site that integrates a variety of components, using type, images (including photographic images), layout and different software’s, for example Flash, Dreamweaver etc... I had decided to design a web site on a client, in which there business is a builder. A realistic organisation plan was carefully mapped out for the development for my documentation, taking into consideration various specifications i.e. identification of user groups, how each group may use the completed advertisement, and how their requirements can be met.
I had started to learn how to use Adobe Photoshop to make images for the web and also my web site. In which I 1st I opened a large image into the program Adobe Photoshop and then optimised, therefore making the image smaller in pixels size and file size. This is a useful method due to people and customers on the internet wonting lager file space and therefore making bandwidth space big, due to the smaller images used. This is very vital to the user of the website as making the web page load up faster and making it trouble free.
Fonts
The fonts “Matura MT Script Capitals” and “Arial Black” will provide the documentation to look professional and respectable. The headings placed within the documentation will be published in the font of “Arial Black”. As this font will make the headings stand out, while images and digital photographs are positioned around them. The font “Matura MT Script Capitals” will be used to write text to help the public understand the use of the web site.
Digital Photographs
Most of today's digital cameras enable you to take literally hundreds or even thousands of photos by simply adding an inexpensive add-on memory module. You can preview your photos right on the camera or on your computer screen, then print only the ones you like and simply delete the rest. The resolution of even the least expensive digital cameras is now high enough to allow people to take very high quality photos.
Images
The more pixels you have on an image, the more flexibility and detail showed, to make the image look life like. Quality doesn’t fade over time and the images can be easily changed.
Colour Blindness
Whilst researching I found out that different colours scheme such as, red and green where the most distinguishing and common colours in colour blindness. The other colours to cause colour blindness where blue and yellow, the second most common form, but it is extremely rare and hardly exist. What I discovered to my knowledge was the disorder of how people get affected by the use of different tints and shades, which is caused by colour blindness. Most people cannot see the colours red and green when put together stating the fact that they are colour blind. Knowing this vital piece of information was an advantage to me as it allowed me to be aware of using this colour scheme, because if I did I would be limiting the users to the web site designed, and presenting unclear information.
Headings / Sub Headings
Headings and sub headings will be added within the design for labelling and on classification of what passage of images goes with which heading or even digital photograph.
Background
The background will be white with different image and digital photographs covering the white backdrop, as this will provide a subtle yet professional look.
Lay Out
Identifying the text to its images and digital photographs will be easy and clear, as the heading will be positioned around the appropriate images, to make the reflection of identification trouble-free to understand. Layout will be easy and simple to follow. The presentation will be straightforward for students and other members of the public to navigate there self around my documentation.
Research
I had researched to find out what colour scheme was beneficial to use for majority of the public and users. I had found out the colours scheme, red and green where the most distinguishing and common colours in colour blindness. The other colours to cause colour blindness where blue and yellow, the second most common form, but it is extremely rare and hardly exist. Consequently I choose to do my design in different shade and colours and trying to avoid the colour blindness scheme, making sure I do not cause any colour blindness with a white background, which was then overlapped with darker literature and images. Within my design I have tried not to put any colours that would course colour blindness, because if I did I would be limiting the users to the poster and presenting unclear information.
Navigation
The navigation throughout my site will be easy and clear. As each page will be linked with every other page in the site, it will be simple and trouble-free for the user to get from one page to another. The other straightforward feature will be the menu bar. The menu bar will be in a fixed position though out the site, therefore making it an unproblematic matter for the user to browse through the site.
Presentation
The design is clear and easy to follow, as the headings are in a different colour to the sub-headings, and also written in small caps. The colour scheme I have used is effective and has been carried out through the site. It stands out as the white background is overlapped with darker literature or images, avoiding any clashes. This is where the successfulness of the page begins. In the duration of the website preparation, planning and development I ensured the spelling and grammar was correct by allowing a second read to allow any amendments to be made as well as making full use of the spell check. The level of English is kept as simple and clear as possible so it is user friendly.
Research was carried out by browsing various different websites on the internet, allowing a broader aspect of design knowledge to be incorporated into the proposed website. Whilst analysing different web pages critical notes were made, these being desirable features, which may have been integrated within the final design, or poor features to be aware of.
From viewing and analysing many web pages, it was inevitable that the design aspect played a major role as to how welcoming the website looks to the user. Layout, presentation, colour schemes and the navigation of the website were important features to be taken into consideration whilst being developed.
Design
The design created was simple but yet attractive. Factors which I took into consideration were relative text size, colours, positioning on the page, grouping of objects and so fourth. The design is clear and easy to follow, as the headings are in a different colour to the sub-headings, and also written in small caps. The colour scheme used is effective and has been carried out through the site. It stands out as the white background is overlapped with darker literature or images, avoiding any clashes, which I had noticed on many other web pages. This is where the successfulness of the page begins. In the duration of the website preparation, planning and development I ensured the spelling and grammar was correct by allowing a second read to allow any amendments to be made as well as making full use of the spell check. The level of English was tried to be kept as simple and clear as possible so it is user friendly.
Creating the design
The design was created by making rough sketches of the framework, firstly on paper and eventually on computer. There became a logical flow of where the contents and features were to be placed, knowing what I wanted to include and what I did not want on my design. I avoided too much clutter and confusion on the design, which would have made it hard to understand and use. I overcame some of these problems by playing around with the design and moving the framework to create a stunning and professional look, one that I was happy with. As I steadily progressed with my design, I started to think about the colour scheme, presentation and the whole structure of the navigation system. As I had researched about navigation systems, the best possible outcome for my design was to link each page within my site making it trouble – free and comfortable for the user to get around the web site. The other feature to be user friendly would be the menu bar. The menu bar will be in a fixed position throughout the site, making it less difficult to locate their desired features from the menu bar. The presentation of my design was relatively simple with no complicated links to empower it with. As the menu bar was fixed in a permanent position making the appearance and the arrangement of my design look professional and tidy. The colour scheme that I had chosen for my design was different shades of blue on a white background. I had originally chosen to make the text on the menu bar black. As this was of very poor visibility to the eyes, I had to change the writing to a different colour to make it stand out. So I changed the colour of my writing to white on the fixed menu bar as the foreground colour was tinted in a darker shade. Consequently I choose to do my design in different shade of blue, making sure I do not cause any colour blindness with a white background, which was then overlapped with darker literature or images. I have also underlined each word, as when users click on a different page within the web site that particular word will be underlined in the menu bar as well as on the heading bar, notifying the user where they are and what page they are on the web site. With my designs I have sectioned each category to have its own space; this makes the section stand out even more rather than having it written plainly in on one large open box. The sections encourage a reader to focus on each individual section.
Trying different arrangements to make the site look smarter and uncluttered with trial and error, proved to be successful as it allowed me to view my website in different formats before the final design
Improvements
Improvements that I could make to my design are: –
Ø Create images that are click able, leading the user to the right page.
Ø High lighting the word when a users click on a different page each time, therefore the user knowing what page they are on.
